Lily Fitzimmons was born in North Belfast in the 1940s. Along with her mother and grandmother she worked in most of the mills in Belfast. She moved to Turf lodge area of West Belfast in the 1960s where she became involved in community politics in her local area. From there she joined Sinn Fein and became a Belfast City councillor. Lilly was involved in all of the issues surrounding political prisoners. She talks about her young son being interned in the cages of Long Kesh and the impact this had on her and her family.
